Get Ready for the New Year with ApproXie Urgent Care!
As the new school year approaches, many schools and sports teams require children to have a physical exam. These exams evaluate a child’s health to ensure they are fit to attend school or participate in sports activities.
If you’re running out of time and haven’t scheduled an appointment with your regular pediatrician, don’t worry!
ApproXie Urgent Care offers sports and school physicals for walk-in patients.
The Importance of Sports and School Physicals
Physical activity is beneficial for children, but it’s crucial to assess their physical condition to avoid serious injury. A key aspect of sports physicals is evaluating heart health. Although rare, some children may have undetected heart conditions that could be triggered by strenuous activities. Most sports physicals include heart condition screenings to help prevent such risks.
Our physicians can also provide valuable tips to parents and athletes on injury prevention, including simple stretches and exercises to perform before engaging in physical activities.
Childhood is a time of rapid growth, and an annual school and sports physical is an excellent opportunity to check on your child’s development. It’s also a perfect time to catch up on any missed vaccinations, as some schools have mandatory vaccination requirements for enrollment.
What to Expect During a Sports Physical
A sports physical exam typically involves reviewing your medical history and a physical examination focused on the musculoskeletal system. The physician will assess the range of motion, strength, and flexibility in the shoulders, elbows, hips, knees, and ankles.
Additional assessments may include checking heart rate and blood pressure to ensure readiness for intense activities. Other tests might involve evaluating vision and hearing, testing reflexes, screening for anemia or diabetes through blood tests, and possibly assessing lung function with spirometry.
After the exam, the physician will offer advice on nutrition and exercise tailored to your needs.
To prepare, bring any relevant medical information, such as past injuries, allergies, or medications. Wear comfortable clothing that allows for easy examination of joints and other areas.
With the right preparation, a thorough sports physical will ensure you’re ready for training or competition.

Hannah M. // ApproXie Urgent Care - Town Madison/Huntsville
The nurse practitioner and her assistant in training are amazing here! They both had perfect bedside manner and made me feel comfortable in a stressful situation. I needed a breast exam in a rush since I was leaving the country for four months. They made me feel like everything was going to be okay and ordered me an ultrasound immediately! Every OBGYN in town turned me down and one even told me it would be impossible to get any kind of testing done within a week, but they got the job done! I highly recommend visiting this urgent care! They are very kind, empathetic, and great at their jobs!
Jennifer K. // ApproXie Urgent Care - Hays Farm
I’ve been several times. The clinic is absolutely beautiful and so clean. I have been seen and discharged in under 45 minutes each time, even when waiting on test results. I love that they are professional and friendly. And Dr. Allman is the BEST!
April Jossey // ApproXie Urgent Care - Madison
Every single time I visit ApproXie, I’m surprised by the efficiency. I don’t know how they do it, but they manage to spend as much time with me as I need while also keeping the wait short. I’ve never had a bad experience here and I refuse to go to any other urgent care as long as this one is open. I recommend ApproXie to everyone!
Shannon R. // ApproXie Urgent Care - Hays Farm
I visited ApproXie after being sick for several days and not feeling better. I love this place – the doctor that cared for me was wonderful and one of the most attentive and thorough practitioners I have ever seen. I was diagnosed with pneumonia and I think if not for her care I would have ended up in hospital. The nurses are wonderful too and again just so professional, knowledgable, and attentive. Check in is easy and the front desk person was super friendly and made that process easy too. I was in and out in under an hour and that was after having a chest X-Ray and breathing treatment. Best urgent care ever!
