When to go Emergency Room or Urgent Care Clinic
Understanding the Difference Between an Emergency Room and an Urgent Care Clinic
Hospital emergency departments are available 24/7, equipped to handle the most severe and critical conditions, such as heart attacks, strokes, and traumatic injuries from accidents. They are designed to treat life- and limb-threatening situations that require immediate, advanced care, including surgeries.
Urgent care centers, on the other hand, fill the gap between your primary care provider and the emergency room. They specialize in treating non-emergency and non-life-threatening illnesses and injuries. Known for their convenience, speed, and affordability, urgent care clinics often don’t require appointments, although some offer the option to book ahead.
Choosing an urgent care clinic for non-life-threatening issues can significantly reduce your medical costs while ensuring timely treatment. Additionally, this helps ER staff focus on patients who require critical care and emergency surgeries.
When to Visit the Emergency Room
Certain medical conditions require immediate, specialized treatment that only a hospital can provide. Go to the ER if you experience symptoms such as:
- Chest pain or difficulty breathing
- Weakness or numbness on one side
- Slurred speech
- Fainting or changes in mental state
- Serious burns
- Head or eye injuries
- Concussion or confusion
- Broken bones or dislocated joints
- Fever with a rash
- Seizures
- Severe cuts or arterial bleeding
- Facial lacerations
- Vaginal bleeding during pregnancy
When to Visit an Urgent Care Clinic
Urgent care centers are ideal for treating non-emergency illnesses and injuries that need prompt attention but don’t require an ER visit. Consider going to an urgent care clinic if you experience any of the following:
- Cold or flu
- Fever
- Rashes or skin infections
- Pinkeye
- Strep throat
- Urinary tract infections
- Sprains or strains
- Mild to moderate asthma attacks
- Vomiting and/or diarrhea
- Mild to moderate dehydration
- Cuts that need stitches

Emergency Room, Emergency Care

Go to the ER for life-threatening conditions like chest pain, difficulty breathing, severe injuries, or stroke symptoms. Urgent care is better for non-emergencies like minor injuries, colds, rashes, or cuts needing stitches.
In the ER, patients are treated based on the severity of their condition. A triage nurse assesses your symptoms, and you may undergo tests like blood work or X-rays. Depending on your condition, you’ll be treated and either discharged or admitted for further care.
Yes, ERs are open 24/7, and no appointment is needed. They handle serious medical issues at any time, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

Hannah M. // ApproXie Urgent Care - Town Madison/Huntsville
The nurse practitioner and her assistant in training are amazing here! They both had perfect bedside manner and made me feel comfortable in a stressful situation. I needed a breast exam in a rush since I was leaving the country for four months. They made me feel like everything was going to be okay and ordered me an ultrasound immediately! Every OBGYN in town turned me down and one even told me it would be impossible to get any kind of testing done within a week, but they got the job done! I highly recommend visiting this urgent care! They are very kind, empathetic, and great at their jobs!
Jennifer K. // ApproXie Urgent Care - Hays Farm
I’ve been several times. The clinic is absolutely beautiful and so clean. I have been seen and discharged in under 45 minutes each time, even when waiting on test results. I love that they are professional and friendly. And Dr. Allman is the BEST!
April Jossey // ApproXie Urgent Care - Madison
Every single time I visit ApproXie, I’m surprised by the efficiency. I don’t know how they do it, but they manage to spend as much time with me as I need while also keeping the wait short. I’ve never had a bad experience here and I refuse to go to any other urgent care as long as this one is open. I recommend ApproXie to everyone!
Shannon R. // ApproXie Urgent Care - Hays Farm
I visited ApproXie after being sick for several days and not feeling better. I love this place – the doctor that cared for me was wonderful and one of the most attentive and thorough practitioners I have ever seen. I was diagnosed with pneumonia and I think if not for her care I would have ended up in hospital. The nurses are wonderful too and again just so professional, knowledgable, and attentive. Check in is easy and the front desk person was super friendly and made that process easy too. I was in and out in under an hour and that was after having a chest X-Ray and breathing treatment. Best urgent care ever!
