Understanding Acute and Chronic Bronchitis

Acute bronchitis, often referred to as a chest cold, is caused by the inflammation of the bronchial tubes in the lungs, leading to mucus production and the persistent coughing associated with the condition. Chronic bronchitis is more severe and refers to bronchitis that either doesn’t resolve or frequently recurs.

What Causes Bronchitis?

Bronchitis is most commonly triggered by viruses, such as those responsible for the common cold and flu, though in rare instances, it can be caused by bacteria. As your body battles these germs, inflammation of the bronchial tubes leads to swelling and increased mucus production, narrowing your airways and making breathing more difficult.

Chronic bronchitis is typically caused by long-term exposure to irritants like air pollution, chemical fumes, or dust. The risk of developing chronic bronchitis is significantly higher for smokers or those exposed to secondhand smoke over extended periods.

Bronchitis Symptoms

Acute bronchitis symptoms usually improve within three weeks, provided you take care of yourself. Symptoms of bronchitis include:

  • Persistent coughing, with or without mucus
  • Chest soreness
  • Fatigue
  • Mild headaches
  • Mild body aches
  • Sore throat

Bronchitis Diagnosis and Treatment

Your healthcare provider can diagnose bronchitis through a physical examination and a review of your symptoms. In some cases, additional tests may be necessary, such as checking oxygen levels in your blood, conducting a chest X-ray, or analyzing your mucus to determine if a bacterial infection is present.

Antibiotics are typically not recommended for bronchitis, as the illness is often caused by viruses. While there is no specific cure for bronchitis, several measures can help alleviate symptoms and support recovery:

  • Get plenty of rest.
  • Stay hydrated by drinking lots of water.
  • Use a humidifier or vaporizer.
  • Relieve a stuffy nose with saline nasal spray or drops.
  • Inhale steam from a hot shower or a bowl of hot water.
  • Soothe your throat with cough lozenges or honey.

Over-the-counter medications may also help reduce inflammation, break down mucus, and ease discomfort. Consult your pharmacist for recommendations.

When to Seek Medical Attention

Seek urgent medical care if you experience any of the following:

  • Coughing up blood or thick, dark mucus.
  • A cough that disrupts your sleep.
  • Chest pain caused by coughing.
  • A cough with a barking sound that makes speaking difficult.
  • Unintended weight loss.
  • Foul-tasting fluid in your mouth.
  • A fever over 100.4°F.
  • Wheezing or shortness of breath.

FAQ's

Bronchitis Treatment

Bronchitis is an inflammation of the bronchial tubes in the lungs, leading to mucus production and persistent coughing. While a cold typically affects the upper respiratory tract, bronchitis specifically involves the lower respiratory system, making breathing more difficult.

Acute bronchitis is most commonly caused by viruses, such as those responsible for colds and the flu. In rare cases, it can be caused by bacteria. Chronic bronchitis, however, is usually due to long-term exposure to irritants like air pollution, chemical fumes, dust, or smoking.

You should seek medical attention if your cough produces blood or thick, dark mucus, disrupts your sleep, causes chest pain, or if you experience wheezing, shortness of breath, unintended weight loss, or a fever over 100.4°F. These symptoms may indicate a more severe condition that requires urgent care.

The nurse practitioner and her assistant in training are amazing here! They both had perfect bedside manner and made me feel comfortable in a stressful situation. I needed a breast exam in a rush since I was leaving the country for four months. They made me feel like everything was going to be okay and ordered me an ultrasound immediately! Every OBGYN in town turned me down and one even told me it would be impossible to get any kind of testing done within a week, but they got the job done! I highly recommend visiting this urgent care! They are very kind, empathetic, and great at their jobs!

Every single time I visit ApproXie, I’m surprised by the efficiency. I don’t know how they do it, but they manage to spend as much time with me as I need while also keeping the wait short. I’ve never had a bad experience here and I refuse to go to any other urgent care as long as this one is open. I recommend ApproXie to everyone!

I visited ApproXie after being sick for several days and not feeling better. I love this place – the doctor that cared for me was wonderful and one of the most attentive and thorough practitioners I have ever seen. I was diagnosed with pneumonia and I think if not for her care I would have ended up in hospital. The nurses are wonderful too and again just so professional, knowledgable, and attentive. Check in is easy and the front desk person was super friendly and made that process easy too. I was in and out in under an hour and that was after having a chest X-Ray and breathing treatment. Best urgent care ever!
